Steve Swallow seems to have a new bass...

This version is quite new, I believe Steve started using it this past spring, around the time he made the new Jamie Saft trio record. When I worked with Steve, last fall, he was still playing the double cutaway bass, which sounded amazing. Of course.

I am assuming this five string is tuned EADGC. Sounds like it anyway.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Steve Swallow last year in Germany and spending a few minutes chatting with him. What a gracious man and incredible player! He very kindly signed my '62 Jazz, which I'm planning to give to my son Max. He wrote: "Max! Practice!"

As for the eyebrows, I think they are the secret of his mastery. God forbid he should ever trim them.

I saw him two weeks ago in trio with Carla Bley and Andy Sheppard: maybe the greatest concert I've heard in 2016.
Years ago I had the pleasure to go to an after-concet dinner with him and Mrs. Bley, and I noticed how nice and pleasant they both were: we discussed about music, about basses (I was starting to play bass again after many years of double bass only), he let me play his Parker, I think he was the nicest in all the jazz greats I ever met.
