And as a former owner/operator of a studio with stupidly high end gear, including said U47s, I agree they may not be the best choice 100% of the time...Nothing in that world is...still the standard (if not, why does every mic maker on earth compare to it?)

Because marketing begets marketing begets myth begets myth. And people fetishize old stuff. Why are stradivarius violins the most copied? Because people at the highest levels of the string instrument world for centuries bought into the hype, until it was only recently proven in blind tests that they are indistinguishable. Owners and players of these multimillion dollar instruments could not pick them out.

Marketing hype DOES apply to everyone, just at different levels for different things. If you are not susceptible to marketing hype, you are not human.

I bought a gallon of a new week killer that was well marketed as a more effective product than Roundup, but in controlled testing was greatly inferior on every weed type but one so back it goes. I'm frankly pissed, as the claims were patently false (but their pictures and brochure were good).
