One more note, somewhat off topic. I saw Vulf live at the whale rock festival a couple years ago. Joe was playing his SBMM model then. Bar none, it was the best bass tone live in a mix I have ever heard. It’s EQ’ed perfectly for that band, or at least their FOH person has it totally nailed. It’s loud and present without being “too much”

I was at that show too, and I agree his was by far the best sound, but so was the entire band’s sound. It’s like the festival went from live bands to a CD quality recording coming out of the PA. I also saw him play with Theo’s band the night before, and the sound was really good but it wasn’t as great as Vulf’s. (Theo also didn’t get more than a quick line check, while Vulfpeck had a 2 hour soundcheck before the doors opened that morning) So I think the Joe Dart bass sounds amazing, but their FOH sound guy is also incredible. I ran into Joe a few months later and asked him about that show and the sound. He said he just uses a tuner pedal (no compression/eq/effects) and lets their sound guy do the rest off a basic DI.

FYI I teach middle school band at TMS, just down the road from Paso.

Sterling Joe Dart lll in black - was having a hard time loving it until I rewired it from volume only to tone only - now its awesome!

I like that idea. To me, as simple as a P-bass is, it's the tone control that makes it.

Its given me the versatility I needed for my cover band - we do Motown, Van Morrison, The Band, Elvis Costello, The Stones, Carolina Beach Music - a wide variety of stuff and with a tone knob and a .104 capacitor, the stock strings and pickup will cover all that territory.

I like mine, it's fun to jam along to Vulf and Joe tunes. My friendly borrowed it a months ago and I haven't seen it since...Ha.

This may be the wrong thread but I am looking at ordering the Joe Dart 1. It's marketed at a low price in the US but by the time it arrives in Australia it is $1100+. Love the funky sound, but there are numerous other new and used options at that price level. Can't play it so am 50/50 on the ordering thing. It's not all about the price but would appreciate any opinions positve or negative.

I started with the JD1 in the original crop, I was intrigued by how interesting it was, and thought it looked awesome. I sold it after a few months though, once I saw they were going for twice what I paid for it, with the intention of buying a "free" bass the next year since they had said they would do more runs.

Last year, for my free bass, I grabbed the JD2 in black. I saw a lot of JD1's with very poorly matched grain and didn't want to risk it happening to me, so I went with black. I didn't have a jazz bass and have always loved the Caprice, so it made sense to me, and I still love it. It's very well made, I have the action low with no issues, and now that I have a Fender Jazz as well, it turns out that the JD2 sounds completely different, much more P bass-ish, so it doesn't overlap much.

No regrets, I got a very unique bass that I love, and I would still be just as happy had I actually paid for it.
