Stingray bridge ..how come?

:( You're right! I should have kept them and sent them for DNA testing, instead of ripping them out of the gaps as quick as I could, sucking them up the vacuum cleaner, emptying the dust bag into my bin, driving my bin to the local nuclear waste re-processing plant and waving goodbye to the freight ship that took it off to Bangalore for dumping :hiding:.

Maybe I over-reacted unnecessarily :hmm:!?

;)
coulda been beard hair? :p

Ugh this thread is giving me GAS for a Stingray...and I've never really wanted one before now :/

DAMN THIS FORUM!!!

what year is the PUBIC-man?
looks really used & abused. The mutes look like liquid hair remover was used on them...perhaps some over-spillage from trying to remove the pubes...

On a lighter note, I had a fretless identical to my fretted Natural 4 (that '88 reminded me of it). Traded it for my G&L . I don't regret it, but I sure do miss that one...

that '88 looks extremely clean. :)

:) Doesn't it just? That photo was taken in 1989 :D.

:hiding: OK, I was just trying to be amusing :(, actually it was a recent pic and those were brand new string mutes (that I got from an undisclosable source ;)), installed on a very well looked after and highly polished bass.

Here's the rest of it (sorry, couldn't resist ;)).

1977. Actually Eddie, that "melted down" look is just the way that those foam mutes go when they start to get old and disintegrate :(. The texture feels a bit like a "Frys Turkish Delight" (that's gonna mean nothing to anyone outside the UK :p) - it's kind of firm and crispy on the outside, but totally sticky and jelly-like on the inside!

I'm not doing much to strengthen the arguement for bringing back foam mutes, am I :hmm:?

With all the topics discussed here how come I don't remember anyone ever arguing which bridge is better on Stingrays. Mine has the stubs for the long gone mutes and the new bridges look much smaller and have no mute nubs. So why don't I ever recall this topic? By the way I like the look better with the older style bridge. I have no idea if it effects the sound of the bass ;)

I see no point of having foam mutes, unless you want to play fast without palm muting. The again, Carol Kaye has used foam forever, and she kicks ass, so there's that.

Wow; serious Zombie thread! :wideyed: But, it's still valid, I suppose; so...
I do have a foam mute in the bridge cover of my '78 Fender P-Bass; and, I do use the mutes on my Rick 4001 and 4003. All 3 are strung with the clones of the factory flats that they came with. I use them for really vintage Rock; Rockabilly; Blues; and R&B. For other music? I use the 25 other basses I own. I would never use my '20 4HH Stingray Special for the "old" stuff - although of course I could. But, playing the bass lines from an Eddie Cochran or a Gene Vincent song on an active bass? That just seems... wrong. So, even if it did have that bridge with a mute - I seriously doubt I'd ever use it, anyway... I much prefer the bridge it has, and I can palm just fine...
