Stingray Classic Returns

I remember playing an Old Smoothie a few times in Sam Ash just before the pandemic.

Loved it, but didn’t buy it.

I personally preferred the old classic’s with modern improvements like the truss wheel and six-screw neck attachment.
I agree that the slab body Sat rather uncomfortably, though. This one looks like it might be contoured…but I can’t tell….probably not.
I wonder if they’ll even do a 5 with a 3-screw neck attachment. I doubt it.

I was a little surprised the classic was discontinued in the first place, although if it wasn’t selling it wasn’t selling. I’ve always preferred the 2-band Rays and the lack of body contours never bothered me but, clearly, I was not in the majority.

For me, personally, the new price tag that comes with the new name would probably have me lean towards Classics on the used market. The lack of a rosewood board option clinches that in my case. I was tempted by the rosewood board classic when it first became available and I wish I had pulled the trigger then.

To be clear: I am not criticizing EBMM for their pricing. They are a small company paying highly skilled luthiers a living wage and using expensive materials to build basses to a high standard. I don’t think the price point is unreasonable in our current economy given the quality of the product; it’s just not an expense I could justify.

Well, that's about as close to this

Having never played the "genuine article", it makes me wonder how close my Ray34CA comes to something like this.

I have played both. The sound is close but the fit, finish, looks and entire experience is not. But the 34Ca is very nice indeed for the price, or at any price. Also, I tend to think a generic foam mute sounds better on a Ray than the real EBMM mutes, as cool looking as they are.
