Hi bass players! I appreciate your interest in this and I wanted to chime in! After 9 years of playing bass on the show, I'm still constantly assessing what works and what doesn't on every song we play. The StingRay Retro 70's has been winning because of the way it sits in the mix. I have flats on it, and there is something really special about how punchy and cutting it is. I don't always want that, but it has been one of my favorites in the arsenal in the last couple years. I use different basses (synth bass and upright as well) to capture whatever the contestant is going for. I have a StingRay 5 I use often and it has a completely different vibe than what the retro does. I have steeles on that so its much more modern sounding.
