Do you know if they're rounds or flats? Hard to tell just by looking at the pic.
Too bad we can't see the ball ends - whether the ball ends are color-coded or they have red silk at the ball end as well.
Unfortunately I have no further information. GOAT (this band) have a heavy saturated bass sound; they are a cross between stoner rock and afrobeat. The bassist is playing through an SVT + fridge and sometimes a fuzz pedal. But no info on the strings. Roto Swing Bass perhaps?
The way the red silks are lining up at the headstock and the winding length on them, Roto SB66 stainless steels are a possibility. Or, Roto Jazz 77 if they happen to be flats.
From the sound of it, I'd say probably rounds. Do not rounds work better with fuzz effects?
I'm not into fuzz so I'll have to take your word for it.
Well, neither am I. But after discovering this band and being currently infatuated with this crazy amalgam they're playing, I'm about to purchase a Big Muff to see what I can do with it. Who would think...
PS. The first two tracks would give you an idea, if you feel like listening.
The only 2 I can think of would be rotos or ghs boomers. Hard to really know with the effects and everything going on.
Thank you for the detective work! So red wrap at both ends plus brass balls would mean an old batch of Roto Swing Bass or Jazz flats?
I would say the old version of SB66 before Rotosound started color-coding their ball ends. Didn't the old Jazz 77 flats come with red silk at the tuner end and black silk at the ball end?
No, the Boomers only have silk at the tuner end.
If SB66 then it is quite interesting the deep and full tone he gets with an allegedly aggressive / trebly string set.
The red silks on the TI flats don't line up like the ones in the OP's pic; the E would be shorter than the other three.
Is it at all possible that so much heaviness comes out of TI flats?
Oh for sure, they're pretty much the most round sounding flat you can get. They sound like week old rounds out of the box. Besides the only thing rounds have over TI flats is glassy top end. TI Flats have balls for days.
