Third this, I have the darkglass 900 and the VMT section is pretty much always on with the drive around 9-10 o'clock, it just breaks up enough to get a great slightly overdriven tone, I use it as the foundation of my sound, you pay the price for darkglass stuff but it's definitely worth it. I also use a VT bass sometimes and a way huge pork loin for even more options. Those are both good options, the VT bass for me only has one usable sound on my pedal board which is a very bottom heavy slightly overdriven sound, pretty much it's the Timmy C pedal for rage against the machine tone, Ampeg isn't my cup of tea though, so I admit it is good but I just have limited taste for it.

Do you stack those other drives with the amp dirt or do you tend to shut it off with the intelligent switch and just use pedals by themselves?

The route you want to go really depends on the tone of the box you like best I suppose. If you find an OD that you really like, but doesn't have a preamp, don't hesitate to have two separate pieces of gear. Sometimes it just works better that way.

I will vouch for VT Bass! I've had them(different versions) since @tech21nyc relesed it. I would also highly recommend TC Spark Booster(4-knob version) if you're looking for something transparent that will give you essentially your tone + a bit more without colouring.

. Does it? I've never played thru a bassman...believe it or not the vintage sounds *awesome* on regular guitar, I'm talking a nice warm overdrive.

I do both, it sounds great stacked though. I could definitely get away with just using the vmt or the b3k on the amp, the clean tone of that amp sounds great as well, it's a very very versatile amp. But, I also use other rigs with my board so that's where the other pedals step up to the plate. The darkglass covers it all, I just like to let the big rigs get some play time too.
