Hey dooods.

Flew from Virginia to Burbank, California Friday night.

I love California!

First stop was to In 'n Out for a Double Double, animal style. For those of you who have no idea what a Double Double animal is, you have my sympathy.

Next morning we went to get a rental car. We reserved an Economy. When we got there, he only had a Toyota Yaris, and offered us a free upgrade to a 2011 red Mustang.

Tomorrow we're heading to Monterey to see a couple old friends and check on our property. Then we head down to Big Sur down Hwy 1 in a fricking Mustang. Sweet!

I fly back to VA on Friday, and the wife is staying here for another week.

So far, this is the best vacation. Ever.

Gotta go pull my homemade sourdough out of the oven.

Oh, and anyone offended or pissed at my anti-Ampeg rant last week: sorry 'bout that. Ranting against Doomers favorite equipment is most uncool...

edit: Oh yeah, while standing in line for fried zuchinni at Tops, saw a dude with a black hoodie with red lining. On the back was a logo for a band named 'Nunslaughter'. On the sleeves was written "Masters of Devil Metal" It looked pretty awesome.

Nunslaughter are possibly one of the greatest old school death metal bands ever. They've been playing the same sounding songs since they started. METAL IS DEATH. DEATH IS METAL.

Speaking of satanic stuff, anyone remember me asking about the show aspect and all that? I got my drummers old keys player to record some organ synth for us. I'm going to do some sweet backward vocals over top. Vocals are going to be the Latin 'Our Father'. Should set the mood fairly nicely. Play that before we start our volume swell intro. It is going to be evil. I think we might have to start playing Blood Eagle out soon too. That song will probably end up being the first song of the set once we get everything going on it.

They might be Satanic and whatnot, but the songs are really good. No technical wankery, just straight up death metal riffs. There's an underlying grind/punk feel to a lot of songs too and they're fairly short. Well worth checking out. Best albums would be Hell's Unholy Fire, Goat and Hex. Nunslaughter have got squillions of other releases that you can find all over the interwebs but they did realease EVERYTHING they did for a while!

Yes! I forgot the mic and cable at practice so I haven't had a chance to do the vocals yet. But the organ is awesome. The keys player was in his old indie band. She is really good.

I got a chance to do a lil demo of the Dunwich DI, so I'll just leave this here.....

Lots of rust at practice, but we knocked it off after a few songs. It was kind of hot and humid in our practice space, so I was a weird combination of sweaty, out of practice, and slightly nervous for no apparent reason. We sounded pretty good though. Getting really close to having a full set. I think all the songs that we're going to use, plus one or two extra for rotation, are at least in semi-song form. There are a few parts that need working out, and one song that's kind of half done. But other than that, we're pretty close. We're starting to plan a weekend long woodshedding session at our guitarist's place. Playing, inebriation, and some board games.

Actually, I'll be in Salinas for a few hours, visiting the 2 methdadone clinics I used to work at. And getting Tortas at the one place up past the mall. I can't remember the name of it, but I hope I remember where it is...

And Uta from Witch Mountain is performing with her other band, Aranya, in Monterey on Wednesday night. I still haven't figure out a way to sneak out to that one, since we'll be at cabin at Big Sur that night.

The Fender MIM Precision Bass Special (deluxe series), made it here in one piece. This model is not to be confused with all the other stuff fender calls special, or deluxe stuff that Fender makes. I have to hand it to GC, for a bass that didn't come with a case, they packed it well for its trip from CA to WA.

It is sort of a mixed bag.

On the plus side: The body is in pretty good shape, not even buckle rash. Came with a BA II bridge and a Hipshot detuner. Neck fit solidly into neck pocket without huge gaps. Seems to be the Jazz neck on the Precision body affair and has passive electronics.

On the not so plus side: What a dirty slut! lol. A bit of a culture shock for me because my gear still looks new because I take care of it. The last owner had some fetish for stickers or something. There is a lot of residue and left over detritus from the stickers on the PG. Then... then they must have been a bit blind or something because they put some adhesive something or other over all the dot inlays. It looks like whatever was stuck to the fret board was about the size of a quarter and has been mostly removed, but leaving behind a sticky residue and a little discoloration.

Then there are the pickups. They seem to be set a bit haphazardly. Compared to my P and J. The pickups are on the weaker signal side. If I get a bit crazy, I might try to figure out the P/J combo that Fender is using in their Custom Shop Precision Closet Classic and replace these 30 watt bulbs.

I have always liked the idea of a P/J, as it is a mix between what I already have and like. But now I just have to figure out if I want to put some effort and money into it to bring it up to snuff

Over all, I can't complain too much for $195. Heck, I could probably clean it up and flip it on CL if I wanted to. But I guess I will see what I can do to make me like this dirty slut a little more.

Well, I managed to get most of the dumb sticker residue off the PG and the fret board. The body is in great shape. I was looking to adjust the pickup height, but found out the screws were mostly stripped. Weak.. After cleaning it up a bit, I threw some Smith Bruner round wound nickles on it. They do a good job of staying new sounding for a long time and I have em on my Precision. That way, I have a good basis for comparison between the P and the P/J. The P/J seems to loose volume when both pickups are on full. This seems as normal as Jazz basses doing the same thing when run wide open.

Now I am on the fence about putting more work and money into it, or trying to flip it. On the one hand, it could sound cool with better pickups. This would also require me to purchase a soldering gun and practice a bit to pull off a pickup swap. At that point, I don't think I would make much of my money back trying to sell it. But on the positive side, It would force me to learn how to solder and that always seems like a useful thing. I will have to kick it around a bit.

I had a chance to get a VERY rare Fender American Hot Rod Precision in Ash and Maple FB. It was on our local CL for like $550. I sent an email like, 3 minutes after it was posted, and he didn't get back to me till the next day to let me know someone else picked it up. The next day I saw the same bass on ebay sell for over $900. Uuuugh..

Yeah, this one is a bit of a rare bird as far as Fender P/Js go. I need to see what kind of a pain it will be to get those stripped pickup screws out and reset the pickup height. I was doing some research on a new bridge pickup and p pickup. I was thinking about Fender custom shops, but then I saw this.

What do you guys think of these PUs? Besides the hum canceling aspect, they are supposed to be high-output.
