Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

For better or for worse I don't usually play anyone else's music. I jam my bands tunes to keep my chops up and improv riff most of the time. It's usually thrashy fast riffing because I enjoy playing like that. I'm not the best at it though. My picking has come a long way by doing that.

We Hacked together a new song skeleton yesterday. One new riff and an old riff put it in a blender and pour. Longest song we have on tap so far at over 4:30 min. There are a couple more brewing that are for sure going to be slow doom grind.

I ditched my nano bass big muff after yesterdays rehearsal, too tame for bass, perfect for my geetard, he'll buy it and I'll get myself a wooooooly mammooooly or sth like that when I got some funds ready.

Still gotta build some new cabs first.... :-D

Guitarist and I in Dustern both uses bass big muffs. Mine isn't usually on, though, and it actually belongs to the drummer.

I'm kinda GASsing for a Sovtek Mig-100 so we can both be using Sovtek amps.

Any of you brethren interested in taking these off my hands? I posted them (and more) in the classifieds, but I thought I'd try these here. I'm fairly easy on prices, so shoot me a private message and we'll talk!

What's the control setup for that delightful vagina dentata pedal? Volume/tone/sustain? How does it differ from a regular muff?

I feel like a fraud on this thread. Im really more a drone bassist than a doom bassist. Droney doom in any case. Now that my conscious is clear, im interested to hear different solutions youve devised for creating long sustained notes or drones. I always run tons of reverb into overdrive (solidstate amp od) which produces a wave of overtones but i find i need to constantly pluck or strum to maintain the drone-y-ing. Anyone else need to create long sustained tones?

I think of drone as part of the doom scene.

I use an EHX holy grail these days. I was using a Digitech Digiverb pedal but I liked the simpler controls of the EHX pedal. The Digiverb was still a pretty cool pedal, though, and could do a lot of stuff.

My gf has one which she uses for vocals. I should give it a try again. I've used it before ages ago and I remember there was something I didn't like about it, but for the life of me I can't remember what. Mighta been the amp I was using at the time so I'll give it another go. I would really like to get my hands on a Nimbus but I've been soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo broke lately. And everyone who hits me up for my cl posting of pedals I'm trying to rid myself of flakes on me or makes ludicrous lowball offers.

My main issue with an afterneath would be the number of controls. I'm too dumb for all that.

Lately I've been using the EHX Ravish Sitar pedal, which is pretty awesome into a reverb pedal.

Heya guys. I have had the opportunity to play in a doom band. I have always been a 4 string player but I am looking at some 5 string options at the moment. I dont want to spend a crazy amount straight up and have been looking at some of the squier and ibanez 5 string basses. My question is between the Squier Deluxe Dimension Bass V, the Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass V and the squier modified vintage precision 5 string, whats going to be a better option? They have totally different pick ups and I am after something thats going to sound good low. I looked at the ibanez 5 strings too but I live in Australia and the Squiers are alot easier for me to get and they still have a look I like. I have played a fender pbass for years so the look and style are whats drawing me to the squiers over other brands. I play through a Orange OB1 500 and a Orange 410 cab. I come from a more stoner rock background and stepping up to a 5 string down tuned seriously low is all new to me.

Thoughts and any other options?

Why a 5 string?

The tuning will be in F and I dont want to set my main pbass up to that. I need another bass. Going that low playing a 5 string seems a better option

Will you be needing the higher strings much? The bands I know of that play that low use 4-strings.

Depends how much you see yourself needing the higher ranges. I'm only tuned down to BEAD, so it's not as extreme.

You can, and it works just fine. I prefer a five string neck at this point. YMMV.
