Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I've had similar ideas with the DS-1 and the SD-1 on guitar. There's a part of me that wants to create a no nonsense old-school Swedish Death Metal board for guitar, and I know all sorts of bands used those in various configurations and permutations with the HM-2, either boosting this with that, or some such stuff. I think also the MT-2 was used occasionally? Seeing as I've already got the HM-2 part covered...

Yeah, I haven't gotten around to do it yet (I need to take the time to disconnect everything and clean up this room), but the first thing I thought of was to start stacking it with other drive pedals or other preamps. I've only run it through the JC-40 so far, but I'm salivating about how it might sound in front of the Super Bassman.

In other news, I've been trying to up my guitar game, and think I'm doing pretty well. Definitely getting comfier again. Unfortunately, one of my guitar rigs has now developed a "pop" when I engage the pedals in the FX loop. I've solved it for the moment by swapping two near identical pedals between the two rigs (the DOD FX10 BiFET Boost and the more recent Reissue), but I know that's likely not a long term solution. It seems to be a buffer issue as far as I can tell, so the modern one will likely work better as the buffer on that is controlled via an on/off toggle. Anybody know what would randomly cause the pop to just appear? The only difference between now and previously is the addition of a mini tuner, which is true bypass, and that was added a few days ago. So while it's new, the problem didn't appear until after a few days' use.

It's one of those cheap Chinese mini tuners - not even a brand name, really. Basically how Donner/Mosky/Joyo/etc. all use the same pedal under different names. The only gain in the loop are the BiFET boost pedals. Typically, I use the loops for delay, chorus, etc., with dirt and preamps in front of the amp. So far swapping the pedals between boards has been successful. Honestly, if it continues, I'll likely just remove the pedals entirely. I have no practical use for a "solo boost", just like having options.

yeah, as far as the “pop” problem goes, I wouldn’t put anything in the loop that changes the gain structure like that, then the addition of the, um, budget components of the tuner may be the perfect storm. For me, loops are just for modulation, delay, and reverb, and work best at unity.

With that in mind, I guess there's no reason I couldn't just put the "boost" at the end of my gain structure before the amp's input. No real functional difference there. Maybe I'll give that a go if the problem persists.

Lol I know right? I probably gasped or at least had a hilarious look on my face when they came in, but they kinda just take the beat and the whole piece to another level of BA. Kinda like the block on qotsa "little sister" but better cuz it's not the whole song.

I've had issues like that with a SUPER cheap mosky buffer and also, now and again, power supply issues. I never could reliably recreate that issue but sometimes changing the little power cable to a different spot on the PS helped. It was also a super cheap PS. Once I upgraded to a (very well used) Voodoo Labs, it went away.

Yeah, I just use the old 1Spot daisy chain method. Nothing fancy, but it works. My working assumption is that the old DOD is maybe just getting old and something is now slightly off? Regardless, after swapping the pedals, they've been perfect. For my amateur solo stuff in the basement, that's good enough.

The real question - with all this snow having shut down everything around me - the only real solution is to jam along to "Snowblind" at full volume all day, right?

Forgot to update, but the last cab arrived. Unfortunately, the 210 has a wiring issue somewhere that I won't be able to root out until this weekend. Not unfortunately, the 2x 115s absolutely kills. I currently have a Mesa TT-800 on top. I never even got the Traynor warmed up. That will be another thing for this weekend.
