Storage Ideas

Mods please move if this is in the wrong forum

My wife and I are about to have our first baby and sadly my mancave has been taken apart to make the nursery

My PC and stuff has been relegated to the living room which turned out to be okay.
The thing is our townhome in only 1200 SQ Feet
I currently have 4 basses , an electric guitar and one acoustic guitar on one of those 7 space Rockstands much like this:

at first my wife and I was going to put the stand and my combo amp in an armoire from IKEA in our bedroom so it will still look like furniture and not some big metal cabinet (which I wanted since it was dirt cheap in comparison but my wife said "NO")
The bad thing is apart from the price , it takes up alot of foot space in our bedroom. And then I also realized that I cant play my bass even through my pedalboard and headphones at might because my wife would be asleep in the same room.

I got a few other ideas:
wallhangers - I have 2 that I have never even opened yet but I am afraid at some point the kid will grow tall enough to reach and grab the bass and have it crashing down on the floor or worse her head!

Go completely to HSC and not gigbags - I can just put all my basses in cases and go for a more narrower armoire that will take up less space - this wont solve my bass playing at might dilemma but I can always bring a bass downstairs I guess.

I dont know what to do really. I was wondering if there were any other new fathers-to-be with limited space with great ideas :help:

Yes, and keep them in a closet. Even before I had kids, I always kept them put away in cases for several reasons (prying eyes, and kids who don't listen), and it only takes a few seconds to open the case to practice.
I don't like anyone outside of my home knowing I've got gear in here...not the pizza kid, not the Orkin man, no one.

Put instruments your not going to play that day in case or gigbag. Should be able to put 4 under the bed for out of the way storage. That leaves 1-2 on single isntrument stands. Placed strategically against a wall somewhere conviniant. Headphones to bass procesor headphone out when cant use combo amp at night etc. Combo amp in living room. Or maybe sometimes in bedroom.

Hmm that is an idea as I have all my extra cases and gig bags taking up storage under my bed currently
I can squeeze my combo amp in the living room too
I love the armoires at Link Removed but they are waaay more expensive than the ones at IKEA by a few grand

Well maybe in the next few weeks I will sell off all my gigbags and stands here in TB
and get some secondhand cases

anyone think the wall mount option for 2 basses as being a bad idea?
I know kids can get to thing if they want to
I knew I could when I was kid if it wasnt locked in a safe or anything like that

Wall hangars are an excellent option. Mount them high and they won't be an issue. Make sure you locate a stud for safety.

I keep one in the living room and occasionally rotate guitars and basses for variety. I lost my music room long ago-my girls are totally worth it.

well my wife is on board the whole basses in HSCs under the bed plan and she even suggested placing my Orange practice amp downstairs in the entertainment center (yes we have an entertainment center with an old school tube TV)

I think I will mount 2 wallhangers high for a bass and my strat

thanks for the input guys
chime in for any other space efficient ideas

For practicing without disturbing your wife.
Cafe Walter HA-1A Headphone Amp w/AC Adapter - Call or E-mail For Price!!

After a number of people suggested this item to me in a thread I posted in the Amps section, I stopped at Bass Northwest in Seattle and tried a Cafe Walter unit. Bass Northwest is the only retailer of these headphone amps. I was pleasantly suprised at the quality & tone from the little unit. Make sure to pick up a decent pair of headphones & off you go.

In any case, she's most likely gonna make you leave the bedroom anyway. Even unplugged, the bass is still gonna make noise.

It's a very early Aria Diamond, predecessor of the Univox Hi-Flyer.

Oke, i wanted to know because a friends dad has a Dia guitar(we think hi- flyer) but have never see a other Dia or guitar like it.

Ooh and i have 2 basses hanging on the wall above/ next to my bed and one guitar(i can't play) on a stand. But im 17 so it is alittle bit different situation. But hanging in the wall is very usefull

I wouldnt concider wall hanging basses untill kids was several yrs old myself. Littler munchkins would be too tempted to go get a chair to climb on so could reach up on tippytoe if need be, to reach that thing on the wall. Theyve seen dad put them up there and take them down, so.,.......

Well put. You can get away with hanging them high up on the wall for a few years, but after that...

If you use Hercules or other "locking" hangars, then the bass has to be lifted up to release - that would be safer.
