I usually put my desktop computer in hibernation mode when I shut it down in the evening. For some reason if I bump my mouse it will start back up like it would if it was in Sleep mode. I know it's not in Sleep mode because the power button doesn't blink. Any idea why it's behaving like this? FWIW, I'm running Windows 7 and it's an ASUS Essentio Series desktop. Strange Computer Hibernation Issue

The hard drive doesn't run in hibernation mode, right? Never had an issue like that and I've been using hibernation for years.
No, never have done anything with the BIOS and the computer has never left my house since I purchased it last year. It comes back on like it would in hibernation mode.
It sounds like either the windows power settings changed or your BIOS settings changed. If you didn't do any changing, then perhaps your CMOS battery died and your BIOS has been reset to a default that has different power settings. Or maybe a Windows update changed something on the OS.
I believe the s3 (sleep, hibernate, and power options) stuff is controlled by the chipset driver, so you might explore ASUS's website and reinstall that, in case it's corrupt or something like that.

Most likely you have your mouse (and maybe even keyboard) set to wake your computer up.
Go here:
Control Panel - Mouse - Hardware tab, click "Properties" near the bottom. In the Properties window, click "Change Settings" near the bottom, then click the "Power management" tab. Uncheck "allow this device to wake the computer", and hit OK. Repeat the same for Keyboard as well.
If you didn't change drivers or anything, it's not a BIOS/driver issue.

When you hibernate, you're essentially copying what's in RAM to the hard disk, so you do subject your HDD to a little extra wear and tear every time you hibernate.
I've had too many problems with computers failing to re-start from hibernation mode. I avoid using it, and I can set the hard drive to shut down at any time I choose using the control panel settings.
Hibernation mode could lead to hard drive issues. Better off shutting down completely.
Hibernation moves open programs and application to your hard drive that are not usually stored in the hiberfil.sys file. If you are running let's say a large gaming file or a CAD program this along with other files normally saved to the hard drive, could over task the hard drive to a point where it doesn't have enough memory to run the MBR (Master Book Record) and your machine will not wake up so to speak. Some important info Microsoft Windows 7 "The hibernation file, when present, requires disk space equivalent to the size of installed RAM. On a system with 4 GB installed RAM, the hibernation file would use 4GB of storage space at the root of the boot drive" Not that this is going to happen but, like anything else if the stars align you could have a potential problem. Many people say nope no problem online. But some who have experienced a machine that doesn't respond know it to be a oh too real problem. hope this helps RTS
