Are people who own Rics required to play like that? I mean I heard they weren't very ergonomic but that's pretty extreme looking.

My bass rides high, but I use Lo-Rider strings so it all balances out.

This thread was a very entertaining read.

Like most of you I try to keep the same height sitting vs. standing. Short-ish arms and an odd torso means I play like Ryan Martinie with the bass a bit higher than normal. Although my arm/torso length helps me a good deadlifter

I actually keep my bass a little higher. Just works for me. Maybe if I lower it a bit I can play like him, too. Haha.

Well, that was entertaining. From the photo, I assumed he was playing it as a touch instrument, like a four-string Chapman Stick.

Checked out a few videos, and it appears that he's a pick and/or finger style player, who just happens to like to attack the string half-way up the neck. He occasionally reaches down near his knees for some upper-register stuff. It's a little hard to tell what's going on, due to the way the videos are lit and shot.

Lots of swampy riffing, while the vocalist tries to throw up a lung...

Recently got a lightweight bass that balances perfectly and has strap buttons placed so that it can hang securely at about a 40-45 degree angle.

This allows the bridge end of the bass to ride lower (looks cooler than wearing my bass like a necktie, also uncranks my wrist on the plucking side), pulls the headstock in closer to my body (reduces stress on my neck and shoulder, and lets me play a bass with a longer, better-sounding bottom string), and keeps the headstock high (reduces stress on my fingering hand).

I've gone from having chronic back and shoulder pain on longer gigs to having none, overnight. Without buying weird-looking, expensive specialty straps.

Seems like a win-win-win-win-win-win-win to me.

Now if only I looked as cool as I feel...

Wondering how different the tone is picking inches from your fingers vs inches from the bridge. Should be similar if you pluck equidistant from the endpoint/center of the string-length. The main difference I'd expect would be that you can't dig under the string as much if you are picking at the fretboard.

Yeah I play relatively close to the neck. I get a nice mellow sound that way, which believe it or not compliments my aggressive picking very nicely.
