Strap locks

What strap locks are you guys using? I don't know which ones are best for bass since basses are a bit heavier than guitars. I hear many good things and also many bad things about the dunlop and schaller strap locks, so I don't know which to go with.

If you can afford straplocks, then you can afford another strap. Sorry, didn't mean to be rude, I guess some people like to change it up with the straps, but for me I put strap on and I never take it off. Definitely not worth the money for me.

:rollno:

Not true. A high-quality, wide, lined strap costs about as much as (or more than) four to six sets of straploks. (Note the use of the Dunlop spelling ;))

I use Dunlops. They don't work loose from your strap like other brands. I have used them for over 20 years with no issues whatsoever. Their new dual-design is great: it allows you to use a non-equipped strap with your bass - albeit with higher risk of dropping your bass!

+1. Who ever actually NEEDS to de-strap their bass?

I don't like the way my bass fits in the case without removing the strap.....

Dunlop dual-design straploks....They have no nut to come off unexpectedly. And the dual design allows you to use a regular strap if you have to....

edit: scottbass beat me to it....

The only maintenance is a drop of oil on the strap side once in a while.

3 of my basses have straplocks.

1- schaller
1- Dunlop dual design
1- Ernie Ball

They all pretty much do their job. Can't really decide which is better.

I saw a Youtube video, where a guy made a straplock out of a thick nylon pick. Looked pretty good to me. I may try it just for fun.

I'm not a bass twirler, so straplocks are never put under extreme stress with me.

I started using the Dunlops when they first came out (ca 1975), switched all my stuff to Schallers around 1982. I went back to Dunlops and wont' go back. Why? The Schaller has three problems. One, the nuts vibrate loose. That's an easy one to fix with a bit or Lok-Tite® or similar compound. Second, the Schaller strap button does NOT hold a regular strap very well so you have to always have the strap-lock equipped strap on hand. Third, and most critical problem, is that the screws on the Schaller ones don't bite enough wood. It's not the length of the screw at all, it's the size of the actual threads. They just don't dig enough wood to be a secure attachment.

The Dunolp Dual-Design stap locks work great. You can use a regular strap in an emergency or if someone else is playing one of my instruments. They are bit of a PIA to initially install on some straps, but it's a one-time install and they don't come apart. And they dig into the wood and stay there securely.
