I have to be honest here: I don't care for the Dunlop strap locks at all. I had them on an old bass of mine. When they were "fresh" they worked great. After a year of consistant gigging (200+ shows) they started to give. Finally my bass started popping off at shows. The Dunlops were history.

I had the exact same experience, and have since moved to Schallers as well.

After 'just' catching my Lakland in time at a recent gig I popped for straplocks. The USA made Laklands come with the Dunlop strap buttons, and I put the extras on my Skyline. I don't like 'em. They stick out twice as far and they rattle. I'm going to do some shopping around and this thread will help with alternatives. Thanks!

strap locks aren't necessary at all......that is until the one time your bass bangs the floor because of a faulty strap button! Once that happened to me....EVERY bass I owned after that got Schaller or Dunlop (I don't really have a preference....their both good at what they do.)

Rattle? You should screw them in, mine don't rattle and I've had them on about 15 basses. Mine don't stick out significantly further than schaller would.

I never dropped a bass in 19 years without strap locks, even with a bass with tiny lock button (but no lock). I've heard more strap-lock incidents than bass dropping-without-locks ones.

Any accident to my basses happenned when it was leaning against something or when some idiot takes it off and doesn't realize a bass neck is long and the ceiling is low.

I've actually never heard of any straploks failing.

I use dunlops and I am very happy with them. I've used Schallers before and they were good until they aged and the part that attaches to the strap stops working. Biggest issue with the dunlops are the way they attach to the strap.

Either way, both are great. Everyone should have a set

I use schallers on all of my basses. With regards to the hex nut coming loose-what i do is take 2 pairs of pliers and a bottle of clear nail polish-cover the threads of the straplock w/the nail polish then use the pliers to tighten the locks. I haven't had to redo mine in 2 years or so of heavy playing.

Also-instead of buying a complete set of straplocks everytime i get another bass, i buy just the buttons/screws from Stew Mac everytime i get a new bass. I think it's maybe $3 or something for a setup for a bass e.g. 2 buttons + screws.

take it easy.

Schallers on all! Word of advice...when you install them, put some Titebond or at least some Elmers glue in the hole then stick a toothpick in the hole and break it off flush.A lot of the predrilled holes are a tad too large for the straplock screw. With that being said, first set Friday night my upper straplock pulled out on the third song. You still have to keep an eye on them guy's,it's not a perfect solution but I refuse to play without them.
