Except that they're not. They're really nominal diameter in inches. For example, I just measured a new set from a well-respected manufacturer, labelled as 45-65-85-105 and they are actually .044 .062 .083 and .102. And another new set from a different manufacturer - .043 .062 .082 .102. A set of guitar strings (well known maker) that are supposed to be 10 - 46 are actually .009 to .043. So don't get hung up on the numbers - they don't mean a lot.Those numbers aren't actually gauges, they're the diameter in inches.
