string pops out of nut?

ok so ive been playing a mim jazz (frigin awesome) and only yesterday the bottom 2 strings started poping out of the nut (thickest 2) though i suppose i play hard but its never happend to me on my bc rich, epiphone or even my stagg, just wondering how simple it is to change a nut and how much it would cost, or would i be better handing it in to a local shop?

also do all fenders do this after a while?

Got a photo showing your nut?
You might also wanna try a bar style string retainer if there's no problem with the nut.
It's a fairly simple procedure to change a nut. It's another altogether to make one if it's your first attempt.

Not characteristic of any bass brand in particular but, if the nut is worn it may.

Did you change your strings recently? If so, I'll bet you clipped them too short, or the winding of the string is leaving the peg too high up. The strings need to come off the peg closer to the wood of the headstock; otherwise they don't put enough pressure on the nut and can pop out. Check this on your bass before you do anything drastic, permanent, and possibly unnecessary.

As a good rule of thumb, I measure 5" past the peg to clip the strings on basses with bit tuners (Schaller style, like you have), but on the A string I measure 8-9" past the A string peg, just to make sure I have enough winds going around the peg to hold the string down. Give it a whirl.

Oh yeah - if you HAVEN'T changed your strings, it may just be that the strings are sliding up the posts on their own, and a little loosening/readjusting/tightening will fix the problem.

The only other thing that it might be (and I suspect you'd have noticed something was wrong by now) is the neck adjustment. I know it sounds strange, but if your neck is really badly bowed forward, like it's getting harder and harder to push the strings down as time goes on because the neck is bowing (a dry, perfectly air-conditioned environment can do this), it can cause the headstock to come forward enough that the downward string tension on the nut isn't sufficient. This is rare, but I've seen it at least twice.

shouldn't it be the other way around, i.e that your nut pops out of the string?

Nope, you have your english backward. Either the string pops OUT OF the nut, or the nut POPS the string OUT.

The thought of having my nut - either one, it doesn't matter - popping out of a string is a mental image I can't even properly conjure. ;)

ok i tryed detuning and adjusting the string and it still happens, the nut aint worn at all, im thinking about having one of those bars that holds the strings down before the nut, i heard that also adds some sustain so its all good :P, what do you think?

as i said my strings are properly wound and the nut isnt cracked, the strings are wound down (so where it leaves the post to go to the nut its closest to the headstock wood)
and i inspected the nut today, it may just be because i play rather agressivly with a pick

OK. Are you tuning to standard pitch checked with a reference?
