I use D'Addario chromes on my fretless StingRay and they are great, but if you want even more zing...

and they come from the factory with Cobalt Flats ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed]), which I have to say were something else.

How much of the sound was the strings, how much was the new pickup/electronics and how much was the laquered fingerboard I wouldn't like to say, but the package was incredible - probably the closest to a round sounding flat I've ever played. I've no idea how long they stay sounding good, or if they get better before they get worse, but they might be worth a shot.

So it is exactly 1 year since I posted the above. Back in December I finally got around to taking the plunge and trying the EB Cobalt Flats. My initial impressions (Switching from Rounds to Flats Advice) were a little mixed but I stayed with it.

Four and a half months in and I really like these strings. The rough feel has gone away (or I've grown used to it) and the glassy 'sheen' has gone from the tone, but what is left is superb. They still have the fast transients and bell-like harmonics but that throaty mid-range I heard when they were new has really come into itself.

These strings are full of character and can produce a wide range of tones from thick and mellow to bright and zingy. But that broad response to a range of techniques and dynamics is predictable and controllable, so they are highly articulate. I really like these strings and so would recommend them to anyone looking for a modern sounding string that seems to have long life and a very flexible voice.
