String Tension for Octave Strings on 8/10/12 String Basses

Hi Folks,

I am about to start a 12 string build in a 6x2 layout (a six string bass with octave strings on each normal string).

I am about to order a custom set of strings from Newtone in the UK, but I am unsure of how much tension to spec the octave strings with. Typically I like around
40 pounds of string tension on my basses, with balanced tension.

Should I match the octave strings with the same amount of tension, or are they usually higher or lower tension than the root strings?

Lots of octave bass players prefer lower tension than standard across the board, but you'd probably want to match tension between the root and octave for consistency in the playing/plucking experience.

I've found Newtone to be very knowledgeable and helpful - might just want to tell them what you're after and ask them for their advice.
