Strings at tuners...

um the only thing i can see making a differance is the amount of coils you use, to til the strings downward after the nut. hwo you put them in the machine head doesnt make a difference to my knowledge
the straight pull lessens the tension on the nut from side to side, and reduces the chance of breaking the nut. and it also looks more professional in my opinion

It's a compromise between a good looking headstock and balanced looking string arrangement for me.
In-lines are "easy", but IMHO on dual side headstocks it's hard to find a nice headstock shape with straight string pull.
In the pic it's "close but no cigar" for me BTW as the A and D strins aren't exactly parallel
