I have a 4 string bass and don’t have the money for a 5 string. I want to play songs that require B standerd tuning but still be able to tune to E standard. What gauge strings should I buy for this? Also I am aware that I won’t have g when tuning to B standard.
Welcome to the forums!
First idea, it's a great exercise to play 5-string songs on a standard-tuned 4-string. You will need to transpose some notes up an octave, obviously. It is a good musical challenge to figure this out. Maybe you only play the notes below E up an octave. Or maybe you transpose entire sections up an octave, to preserve the contour of the phrase. It is possible to play songs in all 12 keys on a standard-tuned EADG 4-string.
Second idea (mentioned by others above) is to use the bottom 4 strings from a BEADG 5-string set. You will need to "set up" your bass (action, intonation, tone, etc.) with the new strings. And you will not be able to quickly switch back and forth between BEAD and EADG. Restringing to BEAD is a commitment to that tuning.
If you are a beginner, then my recommendation is to just stick with standard EADG tuning for the first few years.![]()
String for and tune to BEAD; use a capo on the 5th fret when needed. Seriously. Yours is the perfect situation that calls for a capo.I have a 4 string bass and don’t have the money for a 5 string. I don't think there is a Bass Xtender Tuning Machine that can do 4th drop down (from E to B). AFAIK, only down to D.Or you could get an extender for your E string tuner. That way you could get a heavier gauge string, then have the ability to tune your E to a B (when tuned correctly that is) with the flip of a lever. But then you'd be in drop B. Not sure if that's something you'd want though.
And welcome to TalkBass!!!!

Yes they will. I've had Hipshots that could drop to B.I don't think there is a Bass Xtender Tuning Machine that can do 4th drop down (from E to B). AFAIK, only down to D.
Wouldn't that sound like absolute garbage when you drop it to B?
Using the same gauge string for E & B can't be a good idea.
