got a great deal on a Bongo 5HH a few weeks ago and it's great, but I've been into the idea of using a high C instead of a low B. The bongo was a newer bass and still has the stock strings on it.
A few new things for me are the 5th string and the active circuitry. Again, it's an awesome bass but still is a little too piano-like and harmonic-y for my tastes. I love the harmonics and all, but it's just too much and it's hard to EQ out.
With the low B, I can't see myself using it often enough and it's sort of disorienting for the lowest string not to be just a low E. My muting could be better, and it ends up just being a pain. I'm interested in switching the 5th string to be a high C instead. Guitar was my first instrument and it just makes more sense to try this, even if it won't be used as much, simply to be easier to mute and be less disorienting in general.
I've never ruminated on strings before for bass, and it seems EB cobalt flats/chromes are a great match to help tame the beast. The issues are finding a string set that's made for the high C, and not messing with the tension too much.
If I were to find a chrome XL set (45-100), what's the 'ideal' top gauge that wouldn't warp my neck? I have no idea what I'm doing as a fair disclosure. Here's the chart for the regular 45-100.
