Strings too long ---- which option

I have a set of medium scale Tru Bass 88 strings
( removed from a Hofner ). I want to put them
on a Gretsch Jet Jr, which calls for short scale
strings. Would it be better to do the wrap around
the post thing, or cut away some of the wrapping ?

Neither. If you cut away the wrapping you'll destroy the string. If you wrap the fat part of the string around the tuning posts you may break your tuners. Take it as a loss and buy new strings.

The nylon will unravel. You must cut within the thinner part of the gold silk

You could add spacers or washers between the end of the bridge holes and the ball end of the string. Yes, it will look goofy, but you won't break the strings that way.
