Double Bass Strode Rode Bridge?!?

To all resident jazz cats --

Been working through Sonny Rollins' Strode Rode from his epic Saxophone Colossus.

Always loved this tune -- so killin!

However -- did those guys F up the bridge during the trading fours section?!? :eyebrow: Or is it just me?!?

The form is interesting -- three 12-bar sections with a 4-bar bridge...but I think those guys might have lost track of that pesky four bar bridge along the way!

OK --

Listening back with fresh ears -- here's what I think is going on:

After individual solos, they trade fours with the drummer through two straight choruses (AABA).

Then, Sonny cues the Bridge and plays the last A out before the head.

This was hard for me to hear because I thought they were screwing up the form during the fours!

There's one spot in particular where the pianist must be a little lost -- top of the second full chorus of fours to be exact -- where he lays into the iv chord over the i chord and makes it sound like another section for a moment. It's hard to hear the bass under all that as well...

This tune is challenging -- both the Bridge and last four bars of each A section start on that Bbminor (minor iv) sound.

Very hip. I never get to play stuff like this on casuals!
