Strum me a song!!

That actually happened to me, almost exactly the same way. Girl comes over, sees collection of basses, and says "Wow! What's your favorite song to play?". I shrug and say "Marvin Gaye's version of Grapevine" and play a bit of it. I get a blank stare, and the rest of the evening did not go as I had hoped.
I had this happen to me repeatedly over the course of a two-day family reunion. The event was held at a beach resort not far from where I live, so I thought it would be cool if I could get a singer/guitarist buddy I was working with to come out so we could play some acoustic songs. Apparently someone saw me walking into the resort with my ABG the first morning, and word spread fast.
Unfortunately, my buddy wasn't able to make it because of family commitments of his own. So, I spent the rest of the weekend repeating statements to the effect of "No, it's actually a bass" and "No, I can't just strum you a song anyway."*
*I realize if I were Michael Manring I could have put on a great show by myself, but I'm no solo bassist... in reality it would have went down just like the OP.

When I was a kid we used to go vacation at the beach. First year I brought my bass. Got the same thing as the comic from the girls. Said to myself "self, you started out this music thing learning guitar - there has to be a better way"
Went out and bought an acoustic guitar, learned some chords, learned some tunes and the next year I was a rockstar at the beach bonfires.

I've experienced this many times. I've brought my p-basss to school with an amp,plugged it in and not gotten anything more than "why does your guitar have four strings" "it's a bass" *cute girl walks away* but when I bring my acoustic guitar the attention I get is relentless. even when I only knew four chords on guitar I'd constantly have girls coming up and talking to me.
