Stuck in the corner...

Our band only has a few gigs under our belt, one problem I have run into the last couple of gigs is the set up location. We seem to be ok set up against a flat wall, however, the last couple of gig's the venue (bar) manager points to one corner and says "here is where you set up." How does your band handle different set up locations, and what is the best set up for a four piece in the corner?

I won't set up in a corner. Yeah, I'm that ornery. "No corner" is about the only thing I won't negotiate.

So far my solution has been, drummer in the corner pointed to with the pa centered on one wall. Just looking for other opinions, if it is "set up in this corner, or no pay" trust me, I will set up in that corner.

How do you postion the main pa speakers in relation to your mics for optimal sound?

Do you set one main on each wall, then center your mics between them?

As long as the mics are behind the plane of the speakers, i've never had a problem

If anything I like it because the corner give the drums a little natural projection, so I don't have to fool with turning up the drum mics hardly any at all

I agree, and have noticed a difference with the drums in the corner. Do you have a pic or a stage plot to help me get a better idea?

I should. Let me go through some stage pics and i'll find some of our setup.

We have a 6 piece though. 3 electrics, 5 voices, drums, bass, keys. No large feedback problems

The problem for me is that I play a 5 string and use cabs that have PLENTY of low end. Stick that into a corner and it's guaranteed boom, woof, mud and architectural coupling / phase cancellation throughout the room all night long even with a high pass filter.

It sounds like crap. I'm not going to voluntarily inflict that on myself and everyone else. Especially when the corner can actually be a friend to a guitar amp. Let him snuggle up to the corner.

The entire band in the corner is different but, I won't put a bass cab any closer than say, 4 or 5 feet from the corner.

This might help: Bring some pieces of thick open-cell foam, cut to friction-fit in your ports. By reducing the airflow through the ports, you'll reduce output at the frequencies where the port is a significant contributor.

Same here, works every time.

I don't have a problem with corners, but then again I'm pretty flexible and I do know how to compensate for the different locations with their different peculiarities.

Thanks sam, this is the where I lack in experience. I am trying to get some ideas to help me set up the band in differnt locations.

In a reflective/live room, I prefer setting the band up in a corner. That way the sound has to bounce a few more times and/or travel farther before it comes back in our faces. I wouldn't put the bass amp right in the corner, though, due to megaphone effects.

I hate places without a stage! Where do you want the band to set up? If there's a stage involved, the question never needs to be asked. Much less getting whacked in the teeth with your microphone if you aren't jammed onto the floor with the crazy drunk girls too.

That drape in the corner probably goes a long way toward reducing reflections - it's a good thing. Your band could use a little cable management, though.
