Going into the studio next weekend to record 4-6 songs. Never done anything "professional". Really excited, I have always wanted to do this. 3 piece instrumental, I imagine it should be straight forward. Plan is to record live off the floor and then add some extra guitar tracks for some flavour. Any tips? Here are some samples from our practices. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=954486
Be forewarned that live recordings, especially if the instruments aren't isolated, require you to be tighter than tight. If that's the route you want to go, you should be over-rehearsed and completely comfortable with playing the songs with eachother before you hit the live room. Good luck! I'm sure you'll have a blast. I know I always do.
What do you mean by "if the instrument's aren't isolated"? Do you mean each being recorded on a separate track? If so, then yes we will play live but each instrument will have its own track...
No I believe he's talking about isolating the instruments in the studio to reduce bleeding into each others tracks. If there is a lot of bleed it makes fixing things later harder. Also think about playing to a click or a loop to keep the time solid. That will help with fixing/replacing/adding parts later.
+1. Even if they're miked separately, instruments in the same room will bleed into eachother's mics. Guitars in the drum overhead tracks? No problem. Until you need to do another take on the guitars, because you'll have to re-do the drums or process the HECK out of those overheads. If you feel that live recording is the way to go, you need each amp in a different room or isolation booth (so editing and processing are much easier), or you need to be the tightest band on the planet (so editing and processing are not necessary).
