Sub-octaved Guitar instead of bass?

I recently joined a band that loves to experiment with unusual and unconventional musical techniques. We recently discussed using a guitar run through a sub octave pedal (with the original signal mixed out) instead of a bass guitar. This way, the bass could have more body in choruses and such by playing power chords instead of single notes. What are your thoughts on this? Cheers :P :bassist:
