newtone strings just got back to me - they confirm that their custom strings include custom lengths so we can order whatever length is needed. they ask for the length from ball end to nut. btw, i'm also posting this in the sub short thread.

I just looked at the web page. Doesn't look like they have flatwound. I did make a few choices to check the price, it showed 450 Euro in the check out, I assume that's for one string.

sorry, round wound only, it appears.

i put one set together - 4 strings. shipped, it comes to $36 and change.

don't you have a gauge you like for each string? i do, although for some strings they were off by 1, so i'm getting 40, 76, 60, 92 (as i recall)

Gauge, core, wrap style, and wrap material all can be interchanged in a myriad of ways. Personally though, i wouldnt buy any as they are only roundwounds. The only strings i use other than flats are ghs pressurewounds. Pretty much use ghs roller rockers on acoustic and electric guitars too.

Copy the gauges of a set you have already tried. Knowing the gauges will match - but win - you will have them sized correctly.

that's what i did. i also chose round core because i like a more flexible core and nickel over steel because i prefer that.

I was prepared to pick up a Glen Burton, but after waiting a few months, I just heard that it is now - October. Big bummer.

Anything else out there these days, outside of the Corsair and the no names on eBay?

I've mentioned SmallGuitars.com a number of times here, and I find nothing wrong with no-names, but since the vast majority come from China, they too will take more time to arrive now.

When I bailed on the Glen Burton, I took the plunge on - a Squier Mini. Didn't expect to. It was kind of, um, an impulse buy. I know it doesn't match our sub short definition, but I thought I'd do just one post on it here.

The neck is so slim, and the body is so light, you might not notice the difference between a Squier Mini and a shorter 25inchish scale.

I'm enjoying it. Fun little bass. Impressive neck.

In some cases the bridge had to be moved, but most of the time I left the bridge in place because the adjusters worked fine.

Same. Usually can even use some existing mounting holes

I should have my unbranded (Glarry) Strat on Thursday. I've been measuring and planning with a Silvertone strat that I don't really touch much.

I want to try to retain the tremolo system. Stupid, right? It looks like I can use the factory bridge off of my Glarry 5 string IB bass. Delete the "G" saddle, trim/drill the bridge as needed and attach it to the trem block. I'd like to string through the bridge, as typically done, instead of through the trem block. Any reasons that might be an issue?

Strings... For now I plan to use common BEAD strings. Just cut towards the tuner end, unwrap outer windings, as needed, dab of CA glue or epoxy and cover with heat shrink tubing. Unless there's an easier way...

I'm so glad I found this thread. Unfortunately, it has shown me that many of my "brilliant ideas", are not very original.
