I didn't read all the responses, but you don't need to spend thousands of dollars on a good bass. A squier is just as good. Just be sure to put a tort pickguard on it, a badass Bridge, a set of Geezers, Schaller straplocks, and Hipshot Ultra lite tuners. Then slap on some TI flats.

I know it's not on your list of wants/interests/needs but my current instrument/amp/cab is the best I've ever played! This is the best tone I've ever had. I will never sell this bass/amp/cab until the next flavor-of-the-month comes along. Then THAT piece of gear will be my long lost holy grail!

The nice thing is this can all be accomplished using a smartphone while sitting on the hopper!
