Subwoofer & Top vs. Traditional Amp and Speaker

I've been thinking about this ever since a couple of recent gigs where I went bass to SansAmp to board with in-ears and no onstage amp. They were really small venues so I wandered out and stood about a foot in front of one of our P.A. stacks and... wow. Just wow. The IEMs kept the volume from killing my ears but I still had that bass and kick thumping through my whole body. Pretty amazing experience.

I doubt I'll ever go that route though. The whole point of going ampless was to clean up our stage (visibly and audibly), make set-up faster and allow us to use a smaller trailer (gas mileage). So to pipe the FOH via a 3rd P.A. stack set up behind me kinda defeats the whole purpose.
