Suggest some jazz pups for my fretless

I just bought a vintage modified Jazz fretless, arriving Tuesday. Mostly inspired by Esperanza Spaulding. I got a set of d'addario tapewound nylons to pair up.

I plan on swapping the pups, bridge, neck and tuners.. That's just something I usually do, mostly because it's fun; but, if it's anything like the other squiers I've had, it'll be a huge upgrade, anyway.

First upgrade will be pups. I'd like to keep this bass passive, but willing to consider active if there is a good reason.

For the neck, I'll probably do a custom warmoth Jazz. Lineless Ebony on Gonçalo alves. I'll be looking at the classifieds for something similar, though.

Tapewounds? You're going to want some kind of noiseless pickups otherwise you'll be getting lots of hum due to the lack of grounding from your fingers.
FWIW, I put a set of Aguilar AG 4J-HCs in my fretless jazz with tapewounds and they're really nice pickups. No hum. Nice burp on the bride pu.

I looked at those.. pretty pricey for a set, from what I saw. At least, considering there are other nice options like Aguilar and Nordstrand.

Not sure why tapewound was a question, but yeah.. I was wondering if I should get noiseless. I'm not experienced with noisy 60 cycle hum pups. Have you ever played Nordstrands split coil jazz? I wonder how they compare to the aggies.

I have SD Antiquity IIs on my fretless J.
They are not for everybody and they may not be for you if you are set on putting tape wounds on there as they are true SCs and hence very noisy.
But, if you can get past the hum, they have a great deal of character and nuance.

I use D'addario ETB92 Nylon Tapewounds on my Fender Am. Std. Precision, and Jazzes, that have the Custom Shop 60's pups on them, and they sound great.

Sounds like you got something. What I was going to say is to go with some inline split coils, regardless of brand, so that you can solo the bridge without any hum.

I am a big Nordstrand fan but DiMarzio Area J's are traditional sounding inline splits for less money so are another good choice in my book.
