Suggested Basses for Metal Subgenres

Would you say to a motown bassist "Whatever you feel comfortable playing .... with a tortoiseshell pickgaurd"? Each genre and subgenre has specific requirements and demands upon players and their gear. It's not all image and color. I don't care what color my instrument is and how many barbs and spikes it has. I want it to SOUND good. I hate the way BC. Rich looks. Please keep that in mind when and if you post, thanks.

There's the flaw. You believe that each genre has specific requirements and demands upon players and their gear.

Anyone can play any bass in any genre using any technique they want.

If you are looking to emulate a certain tone, however, you'll need to do some research. What kind of basses are being used in the bands you like? Do the players pick or use fingers? What kind of amps do they use and how do they set their EQ?

We're not going to do any of that research for you, either. :p

Yet you get mad when someone suggests Black, or a BC rich
(which is probably THE bass for metal, if one does exist.)
second I'd say a warwick.

I hate the way BC. Rich looks.

You say that as if there is only 1 BC Rich model.

I honestly can't imagine there being a different bass for each of these catagories. If you can pinpoint 1 bass for "metal", I think you could prolly get away with playing any of these on said bass, without getting beat up or whatever the fear is.

Not trying to be a d!@k, but.. it seems to me that you're asking a question that can't be answered, as you do not want to hear the most "realistic" answers.

JMO?...

I was asked not to continue playing with a Grindcore band b/c I "didn't look good on stage"... I guess my Olympic/Tort/Maple Am. P Bass wasn't "metal" enough. Apparently grindcore is the new glam.

I hate that, albeit don't be wearing a polo and puma shoes, with slicked back hair and designer jeans when your playing a gig like that.

I know that you're not supposed to care what other s think when you play metal, but unfortunately your bands success rides on what other people think.

Here are some pix from two of the shows I played with the "grindcore" band... you tell me:

I guess I see the problem now... :scowl:bass was too white, and I was too ginger... :spit:live and learn.

you look like the cool guy in the band, the one id drink beer with and probably has a cool sense of humor. Kinda like the bassist from Lamb of God.

I dont look like anything special in my thrash band
