I don't know about the five string version, but the four string Fender American Deluxe, (natural finish/maple neck), I bought last year plays great, sounds great, and looks spectacular.
I highly recommend t-them.

I have experience with the Fender Am Dlx and Bongo HH. Between the two, I personally liked the Bongo much better. Nothing at all wrong with the Fender and it is a very nice bass. I much prefer the neck profile, string spacing and B string on the Bongo. Plus, the 4-band pre-amp is massive.

Don't be afraid to check out the Big Al and Reflex if you can find them. The Big Al comes with the same preamp but in SSS or H config. The Reflex comes in H, HH and HSS is I remember right.

MM Sterling HS is also a killer bass if you want to stick to EBMM.
