Suggestions for slow dance songs

I’ll throw one out there from the genre to stay away from!

Behind Blue Eyes.

members of one of my bands thought this would be such a great slow song. They were SO wrong. It’s a Godawful song, lyrically and musically. It. Is. An. Energy. Killer.

Can’t You See - while immensely overplayed, can be good. Crowd reading IS required.

In my opinion. slow songs for slow dancing are VASTLY overrated. If you are in any kind of situation where any kind of dancing is even a possibility (in 2020...) then upbeat uptempo music is what’s up, about 99% of the time. The main exception is weddings, which my really good band won’t do anymore because quite frankly they suck. In both my gigging bands, it’s a never ending struggle to get some members to realize this. Maybe it’s different in other areas, but from what I’ve seen personally, slow dance songs are a great way to kill the night and send people home. Ymmv....

What?!! It’s a GREAT song, a classic. But I agree that it’s not a good choice for a slow dance.

I’m showing my age but here are a couple of recommendations:

Nights in White Satin - The Moody Blues
I’m Not in Love - 10 CC

Even though we are a grunge cover band we do a few. Black by Pearl Jam usually gets some couples out on the floor. Oddly enough so does Fell on Black Days by Soundgarden despite its time signature. Far Behind by Candlebox is another one. And then a moderate tempo one is Low by Cracker. People really like that song.

Open Arms by Journey seems like it would be a good one.
Or maybe something off the Monster Ballads (cause even bad boys have a soft side)

"Let's Get It On" never ever fails.

"Wonderful Tonight" if you're a classic rock band. Might be hard as a three piece musically.

"Heaven" by Warrant if you have the vocal chops.

"The Flame" Cheap Trick

"Tennessee Whiskey" unfortunately always kills.

Thanks all. We are looking to work in 2 in case we need them. We have a month off until the gigging resumes.

I did not mention this before, as I didn't want to influence the responses, but we worked up Just Between You And Me by April Wine. Relatively easy and it sounded real nice.

I admit I wasn't sure my newish classic rock cover band would go for Wonderful Tonight. But my vocal range is similar to EC's, and we have very good keys and LG.

It consistently fills the dance floor! Placement may have a lot to do with this, and slow dances in general. We do it mid to late Set 2. Any earlier and the guys aren't drunk/motivated enough to dance. Any later and you run the risk of few people hearing it.

We just did "Something" for the 2nd time. Took me a while to get the vocal and bass parts down, but feedback made it all worthwhile.

We recently did "Creep" and that worked. Easy as heck to learn, except guitarist still having trouble timing the "false start power chords" just before the chorus, and drummer not entirely sure of the ending. In fairness, we tried it at the rehearsal that was 2 days from when we thought our LS was a no go, and we were scrambling for songs. I convinced/begged them to do it even though LS's laryngitis cleared up. Looking forward to bringing it back.

Used to do "Travelin' Man" (Ricky Nelson). Not a bona fide slow dance in my mind, but crowd always used it as such. It's mostly about the harmony vocals, assuming the lead vox is competent.
