Suggestions for Warwick mods

I just (finally) renewed my supporting membership after a lengthy and rough collapse at the company I work for. But since I'm still employed I figured it's time. It's good to be back.

I have a Warwick Corvette standard 5 - solid flame maple body, ovangkol, wenge. I think it's an '01. I want to change the tone. I get the trademark Warwick growl is spades with this bass, and, honestly it's a little too much for me. I apologize for my heresy. This bass is very in-yer-face and I want to dial that back so I can get some play time in with it. I'm looking for a nice fat j bass sound, aggressive, but not overly so. And I think the MECs are just too hot. Given the physical parameters of the bass (I'm one of those who think the wood matters), what would you recommend for pickups?

And do I need to just go ahead and swap the preamp, too, or is it fine?

Hey, thanks.

Replace the pups and preamps with ones better suited to your wants. The warwicks body and neck woods will still affect the tone. But it'l be affecting a better tone for you. From your brief description of sound wants, Id say dimarzio for pups. And either emg or basslines 2band preamp. You'll probably also need to get a couple metal files to widen the bridge slots so you can use strings of choice on it instead of being limited to tapered strings which is all that will fir their overly narrow stock bridge slots.
