Greetings everyone!

For this year’s inaugural Summer Build Off, our theme is Super Magic Happy Fun Time Free For All! No Rules Baby!!!!

Event: Summer Build Off 2022
Dates: 1600h PST (UTC -8) Wednesday, June 22, 2022 to 1600h PST (UTC -8) Wednesday, September 21, 2022
Theme: Super Magic Happy Fun Time Free For All

No rules, except for several rules, please see below. :bookworm:

This Build Off is open to all comers and divided into four categories:
  1. Scratch Build - body and neck newly built from scratch.
  2. Partial Build - body or neck newly built from scratch (contains some scratch built parts and pieces but may also contain pre-built body or neck from manufacturers)
  3. Assembly Build - all components are off the shelf or customized pieces
  4. Non-Bass Build - scratch or partial musical instrument build that is not primarily a bass register instrument

RULES:
  • All entrants must declare their entry by posting a build thread in which to showcase their build.
  • Each build thread must start with a "pile of wood/parts" pic. The pic must include a written phrase "We are all having a super happy fun time" somewhere in the pic.
  • Multiple entries in the same or different categories is permitted (and encouraged! :woot: )
  • Entrants can enter anytime before the build off end date (in other words, late entries are permitted).
  • Entrants must indicate which type of build they are doing in their build thread.
  • Scratch Builds must be built from scratch from dimensioned lumber.
    • Dimensioned lumber includes: Billets, 1-pce neck blanks, matched tops, stringers, thin laminates, veneers, fingerboards, pre-slotted/radiused fretboards, etc.
    • Scratch builds must not have any components glued up or cut out prior to the start. Built components must have their build process pictorially included in the entry thread.
    • Minimum diameter for lowest pitch string is 0.084".
  • Partial Builds must identify all components used and explain what is built and what is bought.
    • All built parts must have their build process pictorially included in the entry thread.
    • Minimum diameter for lowest pitch string is 0.084".
  • Assembly Builds must identify all components used.
    • All modified parts used must have their modification process pictorially included in the entry thread.
    • Minimum diameter for lowest pitch string is 0.084".
  • Non-Bass Builds includes musical instrument builds that would be excluded from the bass Build Off categories.
    • Examples include: guitar, shamisen, lute, mandolin, other non-bass instrument builds, or bass-related builds that do not have fat strings (as per the 0.084" minimum lowest string thickness rule), etc.
    • Instruments may be stringed or use other means to generate sound but must be capable of generating sounds.
Please put a post in this thread declaring your entry. Include a link to your build thread so we have a central reference point for all of those that wish to participate.

The build off starts Tuesday, June 21, 2022 1700h PST (UTC -8) This post right now marks the start of the build off.

The build off ends Wednesday, September 21, 2022 1600h PST (UTC -8). Voting will begin immediately after the build off ends.

OK, here's a crazy-groggy question for you... Is there any wiggle room in the last rule "Entrants must indicate which type of build they are doing in their build thread"? I want to build a set of matching stringed instruments, one of which is intended to be in the bass register, but the other will not. I have learned that I am far too lazy to maintain two threads. So if I maintain a single thread, what if only one, or the other is completed? This will change the category. By the time we factor in the phases of the moon, everyone will chime in, in harmony, "STFU groggy", and that might hurt my feelings (but probably not). I think that Anne Landers has retired, so @Beej - What should I do.

I don't see why one thread with two builds would be a problem. They'll just each have an "entry post" in that thread which can be linked to the proper voting thread (assuming either reach completion :smug:)

I'm inclined to agree with Max here. Cleanest might be separate threads, but I think you can do a single thread and declare what each build will be within that thread. When the time comes, you could do separate submission posts for each build in the same thread, and the voting threads will link back to those separate submission posts. That way you could maintain a single thread with two builds. As I read the rules, I think this would be legal as they are written.

Anybody bothered by that interpretation? Feel free to raise it for discussion or PM me if you'd rather do it backchannel. :)
