Summer Build Off 2022 - Get Ready!

So I just saw this post and I'm already over a page behind. So many thoughts!

First of all, when I saw the title "Super Magic Happy Fun Time Free For All" was I the only one who pictured Red Foreman yelling "Happy Fun Time is OVER!" and Eric saying "Where was I for happy fun time?!?!?" :roflmao:  :roflmao:

Secondly, Summer Build Off typically included some way to incorporate stalled builds from WBO, am I correct? Or maybe that was a one time thing? I dunno. But I'm not against finding a way to include those builds, especially since we literally just spent half of WBO talking about how "if you don't get done, there's always summer build off!" I say, find a way to include them. A separate category is a good idea. And yeah, I get the whole concern about a 90% done build being in the same category as a 25% done build. Maybe it's not totally comparable, but that's what you get for not finishing on time in the WBO. :woot:
I know, it's easy for me to say that, because I somehow finished mine enough to be judged in WBO and I also have ZERO plans of participating in this SBO. Building that fast just isn't viable for me right now, especially during race car season!!!
This is mostly for @Bent77, there was much frame cutting over the weekend, we wrecked her good on opening night -

Rear clip was bent, so we started cutting -

And then we started welding together a new frame -

So yeah, I don't have time to build anything in 3 months right now. We're way too far behind in the points right now!
There's a Vlog of the race weekend on the YouTubes, under my "Terrible Tim" channel.

As for the conversation about how many basses is enough, there's a whole club for that! Currently after my two builds, I'm at 12 basses and 6 guitars. :smug:

Here's a question I'd like to hear some opinions on...

Should the Summer Build Off include a "Finish That Stalled Build" category?

Right now they can fit into the categories that exist under Partial or Assembly, but there's something about making a specific category for this to encourage completion of a lump sitting in the corner of someone's workshop. :D Either a completion of your own stalled build or the completion of another builder's work that didn't get to the end for some reason. Thoughts?

Yes, we should absolutely include stalled builds!

Having a stalled build category will allow many of us to clean up the work space in time for the next WBO.

Wait... could stalled builds be rolled into the Assembly category based on the assumption that a neck and body already substantially exist?
Yes, they could. Or if someone had built one part but not the other, it could be a partial build too. But we did have a separate category in the 2020 Spring Fling (which is not quite the same as a Summer Build Off, so there).

The first spring fling special edition build off thing was driven by COVID. Most of us were under some sort of restrictions and not only stuck at home needing something to do but also needing a distraction from the general suck going around. It ended up being a free for all in order for as many people to get in on that distraction as possible (at least those were my impressions).

What made it cool and special (outside of the welcome diversion from the slow, painful apocalypse :smug:) was the lack of theme or constrictions. You could build what you want, no matter the state it starts in, and without having to have any sort of shared inspiration or mandatory features.

It struck me more as a showcase than a build off. I think the Summer Showcase has a nice ring to it. An opportunity for you to do you (in the luthier sense of course ) and share the experience with your TB family. There can still be categories and voting. In the spring thing the 3 categories winners went into a best of show voting thread. It's kinda like a car show for building and modding lower pitched stringed instruments but you get to watch the building, interact, and learn... so better than a car show! :bassist:

I think WBOs should have a tighter theme with adherence being a key element. The LCSS (Luthiers Corner Summer Showcase :D) should be about the most participation and the widest array of concepts (IMHO).

All of this ^^^
Seriously, you said it perfectly. I totally agree, even with the idea of changing the name too. It really gives more credence to the WBO as well, sort of lifting that build off up a bit to be more "special", for lack of a better term (my brain isn't functioning yet, it's early).

I guess my thought is why should the WBO be considered more "special"? If you allow builders to literally go wild and show what they've got, isn't that a more accurate representation of skill and craft? And I'm genuinely asking, not trying to pick nits. :D

With regard to the WBO, here is my opinion: Constraints that are too tight will simply limit the number of potential participants... it doesn't necessarily limit that group to the most skilled. If it is deemed necessary to "elevate" the WBO (and I'm not convinced that this is needed), perhaps we should only allow completely scratch-built basses?

Seriously though, it's interesting to have a Non Bass category. I may enter a Non Bass build. For a while I've had these ideas in my head for a four string mandola. This could be the perfect opportunity for me to build my first mandola.

Besides, I now have six bass guitars. That's plenty, isn't it? :wideyed:

Not including 2 that I've built since...

So step up your game, kid.

I have a candidate for that category, though it would also fit the "Assembly" category.
