were they any good i friend of mine keeps trying to sell me his and i dont know next to anything about them. i know fender now owns sunn is it a fender like sound?

sunn amps??

Back in the day.( 71' to 84 ) I used to use an SVT 300W/100lb. head with 2 Sunn Concert Cabinet 2x15" in each cab on either side on the stage. Guitar players hated me !!!!
I think that's the Sunn 300T. Pretty favorable reviews of that head. Never played one myself, but I do have an old Sunn amp that I love---but it's only 60 watts. I would not say Sunn is a "fender" like sound. They have their own thing. I guess you could say they kind of split the difference between the Ampeg thing and the Fender thing, but they aren't really like either......
i love the way they look and the prices on them are basically from what ive seen are amazing, im looking at the old 300 head? with 2 2x15s but i have no idea on the sound ill be pushing with them... is it basically exactly like the fender 300pro?
The 300T is imo one of the best bass amps ever made. It sounds like what bass is supposed to sound like. If you want an easily available parallel, then yes the Fender Bassman 300 is quite similar but not exactly the same. I would buy it immediately especially if it was on a discount.
I like Sunn amps very much, but with one caveat...any time I've played one, it's made me sound exactly like John Entwistle's classic live sound. Not my thing, but it's a killer sound nonetheless.
I know what you're saying -- this is why I've loved every old tube Sunn I've played through.
For the OP--the 300T is a modern amp, as far as I know made after Fender bought Sunn. It's like the current Fender Bassman 300, and nothing at all like the vintage Sunns some people mention. Plenty of people love this amp, but it's important to realize it's by no means a vintage Sunn, and doesn't sound like one. It didn't sound anything like an Ampeg to me. I wouldn't say it sounded like a Fender either, but my idea of Fender bass tone is based on my 38 year old Fender and the Fender based preamp in my Mesa.
If the amp in question is a 300T, it's huge and heavy. Also very loud, with more knobs than you can shake a stick at. I liked its basic clean sound, didn't like its distortion channel. The clean is pretty clear, bright, and deep. Not muddy, but without the "color" that a lot of tube amps have. I thought the distortion sounded like a $20 stomp box (horrible). In the end I decided I preferred the colored tone of the Mesa 400+ I also owned, sold the Sunn and bought a solid state amp for the clear clean sound. Just my opinion.
Check Ebay for prices on the Fender and Sunn versions, and decide if it's a good deal. Of course, since it's a friend's amp, you should have the chance to play it first. Then you can decide for yourself if it's worth it. I've heard some negative comments about their durability, but don't know the truth of that -- any long term users should be able to comment on that. I had no problems with mine in the 3 months it sat in my bedroom.
Considering Sunn probably made more than 50 times as amany amps as the 300T, we are guessing about nothing

played it today, and am now heading back to his house with 200$ its the last year that sunn made the 300t model awesome sound and im pretty sure the price is a steal
now to find a 2x15 and a 6x10 hmm...

its amazing, like over the past year ive been through 4 rigs and havent been happy and the one i was sorta happy with sorta made the mysterious purple smoke and literally caught fire (ripp custom built head) this thing just keeps blowing my mind and ive only had it for a few hours. i use no processors its just my bass (non reverse thunderbird V modded to no end) and the head with an old peavey 2x15 cab. and 200 was a steal aparently it was in his recently deceased father in laws bedroom in his closet for quite a few years (it needs alot of cleaning) thinking im gonna throw some new tubes in er soon any sugestions
That was practically a steal. If it works properly and sounds good, what makes you think you need new tubes? If it ain't broke...
Of course, if it has a problem, it may well need tubes, but you'll spend more than you did on the amp to fully retube it.

nothing makes me think it needs new tubes but id like to know what ive got to work with p.s. my neibhor just came over yelling abput noise... his house is easily 600 feet away lmao wait till i plug it into the power amp (CS800)
price wise on tubes theres an old shop about 30 minutes away that has just about every tube imaginable he sells em for 5 bucks a pop if you can find what you need
