Sushi!

i love almost everything i've tried. the only thing i don't really like is the weird overly-fried fusion stuff that some restaurants do (like Sushi Dan's out here in L.A.... they have good stuff, mind, but the fried sushi isn't my favorite). other than that, fresh sushi and sashimi and rolls and miso soup is wonderful!

When I go to a new sushi bar, the first thing I order is Anago. If it's good, I compliment the sushi chef. This tends to "break the ice," and gets a good rapport going with the chef.

When my 9 year-old and I go out for sushi, we order Amaebi, because he loves to eat the fried heads.

You gotta check out Irori in Marina Del Rey. Then you'll re-evaluate Sushi Dan. Let me know what you think.

hmm. i can't recall if i've ever had Anago. i'll have to try your trick!

Anago has to be flavored (with personally prepared tare sauce) and cooked by the sushi chef as opposed to being served raw, (as does the Tamago (egg, cooked by the chef), so you can order that at the same time (or before) the Anago), so you are able to get a good idea of the chef's skill by trying those items. Of course, complimenting the chef tends to make him/her more willing to prepare "off menu" items for you, or add extra embellishments to your orders.

wait.... are you saying Irori is better than Sushi Dan??? because i agree that it's better than Sushi Dan, even though i've never even heard of the place. i can safely say i'd rather eat sushi anywhere than at Sushi Dan. i was just being diplomatic when i said "they have good stuff." cuz, like, the California Roll's pretty good. :D

when i'm in M. Del R., i'll try out Irori, for sure!

there's a great one out here in Studio City, too. i forgot what it's called, because there are three or four sushi restaurants on the same corner, but it's delicious. i'll try to remember.

Yeah Irori is also great since you take off your shoes and they have holes in the ground so that you can sit comfortably at the sushi bar or at a table. It's an interesting place. Let me know what you think.

Sushi? Yeah baby, yeah!

I love sushi and am amazed how it's grown in popularity. 20 years ago there was one, maybe two, restaurant in the small North American city I live in that serve sushi.

Now there are about a dozen restaurants in town that serve it: from sushi to go like fast food establishments to upscale, authentic Japanese dining.

It's one of those foods that starts to diminish in taste right after its made. Take-out sushi doesn't taste as good as it does in the restaurant. (I thought this was the ambience of the restaurant, but it's not).

Forget the premade stuff in the grocery store, the best way to enjoy sushi is sitting at the sushi bar a few feet away from the chef.

Sushi is incredible stuff. There are a couple of places in Newcastle that apparently do really good stuff (and they're situated right next to a Japanese restaurant, which is excellent, and a Korean BBQ house, which is also great!) so I'll need to check them out!

I've never seen this sushi with raw quail eggs on top but it doesn't sound like something I'd enjoy!

When I go to Vegas one of my friends orders it at the Sushi Factory. It looks nasty.

Here's a pic.
