Sustainer?

I was looking at the Gizmotron, then found a video of a home built sustainer, using repurposed buzzers and a trap off the output to feed that back via a small battery powered amplifier. It struck me that a pair of pickups could be used directly in such a loop. Does anyone have any experience?

Since abound quality is not a factor, I wonder if a cheap electric guitar humbucker, split as a receiver and transmitter would do the job for $10, or if the two halves would interfere.

Edit: the video was on guitar... Could it work for bass?

I see the issue is DC values, requiring rebuilding a pickup to around 8 ohms. I have a a coil winder.

Separation seems to be advised.

So a follow up question is could the driver section work under a pick guard, as this means routing need not be so tidy, and the instrument would look the same, but enough magnetic field?

I know there's a minimum separation distance required between pickups when installing a Fernandez sustainer system, which works on essentially the same principle. It takes the signal from the bridge pickup and transmits it back through the neck pickup. If they're too close it doesn't work properly.

Yes. That realisation kicked in after I'd had some coffee :)

I'm going to add this to my crazy guitar build if I can make or buy a flat pickup I can entirely hide and make the sustainer circuit external. Then it will be none more black and "listen to the sustain" yet look pretty much vanilla. Stereo jack out to the preamp.

If this works, then after my EUB build (so 2019 ;) ) illI see if I can replicate the sustainer on my parts Jazz, although without concern regarding concealing the pickup.
