SVT and lightning the load

According to Randy (owner of Mesa), the Strategy produced a continuous, measured, 485W (I think, because of being supplied 132V input or something) during UL testing.

Read about it for yourself, if you want, in the Strategy/Prodigy thread.
Then why don't they list the wattages as RMS like everyone else does, then?

Brand new, VT Bass v2.
9v battery
Stingray SR5HH, stock, fresh battery, active electronics at midpoints, VT Bass pedal.

When the pedal is engaged, I get significant hiss and audible background noise. It is quiet in bypass mode.
The settings are such to produce a moderate grind when compared to the bypass mode.
I use my bass player's rig, which is a Markbass LM-III amp driving a JBL E140.

Battery would be the most quiet operation. How do you have the pedal set? Is the pedal set for unity gain or a boost? How much drive and tone settings? If you turn off your guitars volume does the hiss go away? Also, if you have a fair amount of high end on the preamp of the bass amp that will accentuate any hiss.

A certain amount of noise is normal with a distortion device be it a solid state pedal or a tube amp. Your main concern should be the signal to noise ratio. Do you actually hear this noise when playing with the band.

The Strategy power ratings are for continuous output (465w/250w/125w). Since the amps have not yet been released there are no ratings listed - but in this thread you can read it from Randy Smith directly. Thanks!

i don't understand why everyone complains about the weight issue of big tube amps. they have wheels on them. maybe you are transporting them the wrong way? our band had a trailer with a ramp on the back. you just rolled the amp up or down the ramp. pretty easy. the only time you had to lift it was if there was a stage that only had steps going up to it. you just got another bandmate to help you. it wasn't that bad. most stages have wheelchair ramps these days so you can just roll it up the ramp. as for the head i always just set it on top of the power amp case for the main speakers or if not using your own PA equipment set it ontop of a guitar cabinet or something else with wheels. you just roll it up to your cab once it's in place then lift it up on there or you can even get help from a bandmate if you want to.

Read the entire thread. Thank you...does look like a very good amp. From what I'm getting out of it, you are indeed saying that it's 465w RMS with approx. 900w peak, correct? Then why not use RMS in the promo stuff since it's a recognized standard? I know some people don't like it but it's the standard the industry has chosen. When I see amp advertising not using the agreed-upon standards to rate their gear, I'm immediately suspicious, especially after the TC incident.

As far as peak, I'll once again defer to Randy's own words: "Peak power is well beyond the 450 RMS we claim. How much? I don't know. Could be up to twice. I prefer the old Rolls-Royce power specification: "Adequate."
(actually, it's somewhat stunning, especially the little Prodigy.)"

if you use a truck just pull the cabinet to the tailgate. someone can get up in the truck and pull up on the towel bar while the other person picks it up from the bottom of the cab and slide it up into the truck and lay it down. i've even loaded it myself before. do the same thing just pick it up from the bottom and slide it into the truck laying down flat.

Which is why we use these on the back!!:

I'll be honest, I once turned my Heritage SVT all the way up into an 810 and started getting nauseous and almost puked. So peak power really isn't as much the issue for me as RMS. But I consider that issue clarified and resolved in an adequate (OK, it was somewhat stunning ;) ) manner, so very good then. Thanks for the time.

BTW, our guitarist uses Mesa...old Mark II into what looks like a 112 Mesa bass cab with a guitar speaker in it. Sounds fat!

Excellent! Thank YOU, and let me know if you've got any other questions or if there is any way I can assist you.

There's a reason everyone makes a comparison between a SVT and everything else. Nothing else sounds like a SVT. A 44 year old design. Talk about a home run. 44 years old and nothing has topped it. Sure, there are many attempts to but nothing has surpassed the "pig" and the "fridge". 85lbs and 145lbs. That's just the way it is. No substitutions. Of course you can find another amp. No problem. But that's just what you'll have. Another amp.
