SVT and lightning the load

A stretch? I don't think so . I just haven't ever heard anyone one ask , " what comes close to sounding like a Ashdown"? Or what ever else.

I'm just saying that the idea of 'topping' it is subjective. For example I would say that my Thunderfunk head 'tops' the SVT in every conceivable way. My preference.
The fact that the SVT has been around for forty of years does not make it 'superior,' just as some would claim the Fender P bass isn't 'superior' to something else. Preferences.

That's irrelevant. Again, just because it's popular doesn't make it 'better' or 'the best.' P basses are very, very popular-are they 'the best?' Frankly, SVT is not nearly as popular anymore anyway, since the advent of so many other choices in the last couple of decades, and last few years in particular. You really think more SVTs are sold each month than some micro amp these days? I'd be surprised.

While more SVT's aren't sold than PF heads, they still sell a butt-ton, and I see more SVT's on pro stages these days than I ever have in the past, and they still sell as many as they make. So the idea that it's not as popular as it once was sort of flies in the face of the evidence.

Bassgod, you are correct. I found several of those little Mesa Thiele 112's on Ebay, although his has a different speaker in it than the stocker. The guy who owned it before him, though, is a bass player, and he loaded it with some big Gauss bass speaker and used it for a small cab.

You need to understand , I'm a old guy 57 and I've been using SVT's since the 70's. I've tried many others and have never found a direct replacement for that TONE. I own micros and I've played Mark Bass and Sun, Acoustics,Eden. They're all fine at what they do. I'm 57 and I still lug a SVT.

Now they come stock with the mesa black shadow, but they used to be Electovoice EVM12L which weighs in at 20lbs and is rated 200watts - a beast of a speaker. The Thiele was designed around the EV12L, the low end is suberb!

However.................

I have owned an early original SVT and played through several backlines. With John K's help, I have come very close to that tone with an SVT 7 pro and one of John's Barbershop clones.

I couldn't be happier with my 15 pound SVT.... :D Thanks again John.

You mean you're not trying to get that Ashdown or Thunderfunk tone? :D

But no need to rewrite history in order to make your point ;)

If your talking to me, I'm not sure why. I'm not attempting to 'rewrite history,' I'm explaining how things are NOW.
Sure, we all see SVT's at concerts. You know how many I see at clubs/bars/corporate/wedding etc. gigs?? None. I don't see anybody shlepping these things to a pro(excluding concert level) OR weekend warrior gig, ever. I know it happens, but I've yet to see it. But I see lots and lots of other amps, including Ampeg.
They sell every one they make? How many do they make? I'm genuinely curious to know.

Indeed. I'm older than you and still cart one too! Hell, I wouldn't have it any other way! ;)

But, to be fair, I DO use my 7Pro and get pretty good results as well. It will never replace the Heritage, but it does the job!

Got no clue how many they make, but the Heritages get 250 per year since they started in 2010, and I know they have to sell way more standard CL's and VR's than that.

Anyway, while I'll be the first to tell you that you don't see SVT's on a regular basis in weekend warrior situations, I can name 5 or 6 bass players around Orlando off the top of my head that use SVT's on a regular basis, including moi. Sure, I don't use them on every gig, but I darn sure use mine as much as is logistically sane. And there's a lot of folks who may not use them on every gig but have them. Put it this way...if they didn't sell in large enough numbers to keep making, they wouldn't keep making.

I wanted the Svt 2 tone but more power and less weight. I went with a svt2 pre and a SS power amp ( 1200 watts) Couldn't be happier. My whole rig (pre, power , tuner, bbe, and case ) weighs about 50lbs. Sounds great. Unless you have to have the tube power section it might be something to look at. Some guys love that tube power section when ya push it, I get about 95% of that tone with my rig.
