svt-vr preamp tube question

I think I have a question similar to this. I was going to start a new thread but maybe not. Anyway, I play mainly rock, and I will be getting a VR shortly, but I am a "TEWB-NEWB". Since the VR doesnt have a separate gain knob, and I want to be able to get that hot grindy, gritty rock tone without having to deafen everyone, so what tubes should I use? Higher gain ones? I don't want to buy the CL because everyone says the VR feels more "open".

Sorry for jacking your thread!

i would leave the amp alone and put a VT pedal in front of it if you want drive/grind/distortion.

Next question for the experts - My preamp has indeed been modded for 12ax7s. Is it worth restoring to original? If it's going to take a trip to the shop soon anyways, I may have them restore it while it's there, but I don't know how much difference in sound it's supposed to make. Any opinions? And an addendum - it also says 12AX7 or 12AU7 on the tube chart in place of the 12DW7, but came to me with a 12DW7. The mods John referenced seem to pertain to the preamp...

I don't want it full out distorted necessarily.......

with the VT pedal you can dial in any amount that you want, from perfectly clean, to completely fuzzed out distortion, and anything in between. you can also make it sound like the SVT's natural grind when pushed, only at a low output level.

if it were me, i would put it back to the 100% stock circuit. NOS 12DW7's are plenitful and inexpensive and will last 20 years.

I plan on it at this point. What are your thoughts on the splitter/driver tube? The tube chart was edited at one point to say 12ax7s in all of the 12dw7 slots, including the one before the 12BH7s but it has a 12DW7 in it now. Do you know of any modifications recommended for that position? How much difference could this tube swap make vs the original circuit/gain structure/etc? Thanks again for your help on this.

i don't know of any factory mods for the phase inverter/driver circuit, so just follow the original schematic in the driver section. here's a scan i made of an original one in case you don't have it. just check to see if all of the resistors in the circuit connecting to the 12DW7 (V1) are the original values.

Looks like all the resistors in that section are correct. I have a Jack Darr amp book so I had a schematic, but thanks for a high res version, beats breaking out my magnifying glass to find the values.
