SVT-VR with SVT410HLF?

Hi folks,

Anybody run this setup? I would love your feedback.

I looove how the VR sounds with the 810 (not even comparable with the SVT-CL). I already own the 410HLF and I can't really justify to buy both the 810 and the VR right now...

2nd question: Last time I played the VR in a store, there was a very annoying ''hissing'' sound that was impossible to get rid of. Everything was plugged in properly and all. Is it something normal or was it a problem with this specific unit?

Not at all. The HLF goes way lower than the 810E, but it goes down to freqs that I consider useless in a mix for bass (28-40 hz). Whereas the 810E pretty much hits all the freqs that I like and doesn't go extremely low.

Oh you posted one Jimmy while I was writing a book.

Seriously the SVT-410HLF is a completely different cab than an 810E. And I'm not refering to the part about 18" taller and more speakers. I hope this explaination clears some of the air.

The 810 is very controlled and tight bass. The cab sops up watts like a sponge. It almost feels like you can never get enough power to it. I figured out how, use 1 whole amp per cabinet. The 810's response falls off quickly below about 55 Hz. With the right power and tone adjustments its a very punchy refined, tight sound. This is due to the cab being 4 small sealed enclosures.

The 410HLF is one open three ports deal and has a looser feel to it. More simliar to my 215 ported cabs. The 215 has 4 ports.

This is probably why Maxbass says its muddy. The 410HLF will take your power and turn it into gail force winds blowing out the front of the cab. More so than an 810 with full power. The frequncy response is rated down to 28Hz but I've never tested it. It has even more bottom end than my 215 cabs do and makes as much music with less watts. I play mine with the horn turned off, BTW. If I dont the horn clicks (not powerful enough)

So what I was saying with my previous post is. Hook up the SVT head, start tweaking the tone controls until you get the sound you like. I would prefer two 410HLF's to one 810E for the sound they make. Your SVT head will power two nicely.

I still had a 410HLF when I got my VR. As usual, my finding/opinion is pretty much the same as JimmyM's. I really liked the HLF with the hybrid rig I was running before, but couldn't dial out that deep "wubby" kinda sound I was getting without losing some of the good low/low-mid I liked. I was much happier with a switch to an 810 (and eventually an NV610). If you were trying to be "under" some heavy guitars (think "And Justice For All") it might be a better option for you.. but I moved mine out pretty quickly.

That's what I thought too but no, even with the high and low switches off and everything at noon (and less), there was this very audible ''hiss''... I did not remember noticing this when I tried it at another store, a while ago. It was even hooked up with a neutrik connector.

I'm running an Ampeg SVT Classic head & two SVT 410HLF cabs. One on it's side & the other straight up on top of that with the head. Sounds amazing. Don't let anyone tell you the 410hlf is a boomy cab. I'ts boomy if you sit in GC & play around with it. It's all in the way that you use it. Tweek your EQ a little here & a little there & there we go, tight, punchy, deep growl. I use to have the Ampeg 810E but the low end roll off was way to much for me & you loose so much sustain with sealed cabs.

Love the pair just for that tone! But I hate the noisy fan of the VR in a quiet setting. So instead (for recording purposes only) I use a GK 700RB-II and that emulates the VR very well without the noise!!
