SVT woes

Why is it that when something is put in either of my SVT5's effects loop, the sound is non-responsive? Is it the SVT or the thing I'm triying to use as an "effect" (Behringer Autocom Pro XL) I am the first owner of both things. I hook up the Behringer to the Clean loop and try adjusting stuff, and NO change whatsoever goes on to the tone. Any ideas? Maybe I'm missing something painfully obvious. I don't know much technical aspects, I just play bass.
