SVT100 - any info?

I have one of the SVT-100's. I have had it for almost 2 years now but only use it for home use at the moment. If you use this for live performance, what size venue is this good for? I think a 300 watt SVT would be overkill for any places I would play.

I would be interested in hearing what settings other owners use and if you are able to get a dirty/gritty sound from it? I get it dirty sounding if I plug in a high output bass into the high channel, but don't know if that hurts anything?? Not sure if I should investigate different preamp tubes to get some grit out of it. Sounds good as is but I want it to sound great!!

I appreciate any feedback anyone can give.

I acquired one about two months ago, and after a little jam with some friends I left feeling like it was having a hard time keeping up volume-wise with the drummer and the guitarist (who was playing through a Bassman+4x12 I believe?). So I took it to a tech explaining my issue and he just recently got around to it and said the output seems to be normal for what it is. He did a few little touch ups but nothing major. He also said the tubes seemed fine.

I'm picking it up tomorrow and I'm going to give it another chance since I think it had a cool tone (pretty scooped and growly, but I didn't get to mess with it too much) and I like the fact that it seems kind of like a mini-svt. I want to try it in a few contexts before I bail and look for something else to suit my needs...i.e. loud, tubes, not 1,000,000 lbs., not $1,000,000, you know.

It's basically ampeg's attempt at a marshall so no surprise you found it scooped and growly. Some people say they're an SVT pre into a V4 power amp, which I don't believe is accurate on either count. I haven't found an SVT-100 labeled schematic, but they're supposed to be re-badged Invalid Link Removed.

One of the V4 reissues, or an older V4, might get you a little further with bass. Similar power ratings but a more flexible EQ stage might help you cut through a bit more.

@zartalexander The schematic has test point readings that are used to check out the amp. If you tech doesn't have a copy, it would be useful to have it and the bias document.

Wouldn't these be for the SVT-100T and not the SVT-100? The B15T/SVT-70T schematics would be missing a few tubes I think...

Actually, yes! Other than the goofy looking 1.5 inch overhang over the sides of the cab...

I'm curious to see how it will sound in a band setting though - not sure if it will have enough to run with the guitar player's Friedman head and 412 cab. (he likes to crank it up)

I'm running it through my 8 ohm Ampeg 410, and it sounded good. When I plugged the second speaker cable to my 210 Avatar to go along with the 410, the sound really came to life. I'm gonna have to pull out the Avatar B212 to see how it fits at some point. I'll probably wait until I take it to the tech for a once over and get it back.

Just picked up a svt 100 yesterday. $400. Pretty happy about it. More mellow than my V4. Not quite as loud. Doesn't sound like an svt. I only got to play it for about 5 min with dead strings. So I don't have a full report yet. For $400 I had to say yes.

Congrats on the pickup. These are some awesome amps and you got it for a reasonable price. I'm sure this was mentioned in the thread but, these were V5 amps that were marketed for guitar and were rebagged to entice bass players.

As noted above, you may need to take it to the doctor for a check up.
