SVT2 PRO noise

Good afternoon, my fellow bassist! So, I'm having a slight problem with my 2 pro. It started making a noise when I kick it off standby. It sounds like an electrical surge of sorts. It's loud enough that my guitarist made a comment "that didn't sound good". The head sounds fine after the initial second of whatever is making that sound. I'm wondering if it could be a transformer going bad.

A qualified tech should be able to give you a better answer and know how to remedy the issue.

Guaranteed not to be the transformer, so now that your diagnosis has confirmed your troubleshooting skills, I suggest that you contact a QUALIFIED service tech who will be able to diagnose correctly and repair.

Not looking to tear into it, agedhorse. Just trying to get an idea what it's going to cost when I take it to the tech, which isn't easy to find.. CAPEESH?

With all tube amps, I'll usually try re-seating the tubes, all of em, and/or swapping the pre amp tubes with known good ones firstly.

If no change, then it's tech time.

A list would not be of any real help here. If not a failing tube (valve) or a standby switch getting funky the amp needs to be looked at stage by stage to locate where it comes from. You then need to find the resistor, capacitor, tube socket, maybe cold solder joint that decided to show its head finally. Parts "could" be cheap, finding and correcting could also be quick or "expensive". A well trained amp tech is your best friend.

if you don't have the experience, do not use 'flat earth science' to trouble shoot the problem. Bring it to a QUALIFIED service tech as suggested by agedhorse.

Sorry you're having amp problems, but you never mentioned cost in the OP. Just guessing. Like I would do.

This is true, I "know" just enough about cars to get them to replace poopie that it doesn't need and while they are doing that they usually find out what is really wrong with it.

Well, for future Talkbassers.. I did find out from another forum that doesn't have so many "gurus" that like to talk down to the average person, that the noise I'm hearing is very common. Several people commented that their 2 Pro does the same thing. I'm just glad someone can help with some true wisdom. Hope this helps someone!

Even if the noise is "common" (within that statistically-invalid group), you still have an amp that's begun to behave differently than it used to. That means one or more parts have begun to drift/degrade. On that basis alone it's worth getting it onto a tech bench before the underlying cause of the noise morphs into an expensive repair and the subsequent forehead slap.

By the way, everyone here means well. It's just that a few of us aren't exactly the take-home-to-meet-the-parents type. No big deal. Personally I don't mind getting a bit scuffed up if I come away from the experience having learned something new (even about myself).

There was nothing disrespectful about the advice you received, even if it wasn’t the answer you wanted to hear.

The other forum’s advice is simply wrong, it’s NOT normal for the amp to make that noise, even if that’s the answer you want to hear.

Why bother coming here to ask questions, just to argue with the answers you receive from knowledge folks who work in the industry?

So everyone here will know, the SVT 2 PRO is a noisy piece of junk 'cause another forum says it's normal and okay.
Hope I got that right, I don't want to be disrespectful.
