Sweep Picking

When I play, I tend to use one finger and rake down the stings with one finger. I know Jaco did this, so it must not be that bad. But I just want to know what you guys think. My bass instructor told be I should try and fix it, but I've been playing that way for the past 3 years. Like in lick to sweet emotion by aerosmith, the intro lick I fixed my sweep picking on that song yesterday, but it took me forever and was to hard. I just want to know if you guys think I should break the habbit or not.

I don't know of any sweep picking in the intro to sweet emotion. It does involve string skipping, but not any sweep picking.

Perhaps you're talking about another riff, but in the transcriptions I have seen there is no sweep picking.
